That ‘time for a drink’ moment doesn’t have to mean alcohol. It’s about carving out time for yourself and allowing bold, beautiful flavours to bring you back to you. That’s why we use apple cider vinegar instead of alcohol to bring out the unique character of each ingredient to create a blend that tastes good and feels good too.
But what is it?
A full-bodied, fiery blend of pressed ginger juice, zippy apple cider vinegar and mellow orange blossom honey, with a chilli kick. A refreshingly dry and complex non-alcoholic drink to boost your wellbeing and bring you back to you.
Our Ginger Switchel & Soda is just 34kcals. That’s less than half the calories in a small glass of white wine or a single G&T. It’s 63% Organic, 100% natural.
Switchel is not straight vinegar. The vinegar is just one ingredient in the blend and in just the right amount to provide a refreshing zing, and flavoursome bite. A bit like seasoning, it’s role is to enhance other flavours. It makes the ginger really jump out of the glass, and when you add it as an ingredient in other cocktails, it will amplify those too making them the best tasting drinks you’ll ever have (alcoholic or not).
Have a surprisingly long history, dating back to Ancient Greece. But it was centuries later, in 17th-century England and colonial America, that they became a popular drink, often known as “shrubs” and “switchels”.
Traditional drinking-vinegars were made by macerating fruit, herbs or spices with sugar or honey before straining and adding vinegar. These tart, flavourful syrups were then mixed with water for a refreshing and reviving drink.
Industrial food processing and refrigeration almost led to the demise of this drink entirely. But thankfully today, age-old recipes are being rediscovered and new ideas are being developed to reintroduce people once more to these delicious beverages.
Meet the maker
I’m Bethan, the founder of Mother Root: alcohol-free aperitifs crafted to excite your tastebuds and make you feel good.
My first aperitif – a re-energising Ginger Switchel – is an all-natural infusion of simple, yet powerful ingredients with beneficial properties: pressed ginger juice, Organic apple cider vinegar, blossom honey with a lick of chilli for a bit of a kick. It’s designed to be mixed over ice with soda water, and garnished with a sprig of rosemary, for an invigorating pre-dinner spritz.
I started to make this drink while pregnant as a delicious alcohol-free alternative. After 10 years of working in the wine trade, I wanted to still feel part of the social scene with friends, and experience something really flavourful and well-crafted. But it was actually life as a new mum - going through all the things that happen in this new stage of life: exhaustion, anxiety, loneliness - that made me realise how much I really needed a feel-good, alcohol-free drink in my life. This was something I could look forward to enjoying at the end of another long day, but that - unlike wine - would also nurture me, help balance my mood and support better sleep.
I realised that the “time for a drink” moment, doesn’t have to mean alcohol. It’s about so much more. It's about ritual, downing tools for the day, carving out time for yourself, and doing something pleasurable. In creating Mother Root, my aim is to transform the meaning of drinking for pleasure, and craft a delicious new alcohol-free ritual that nurtures your wellbeing. The natural world is my muse, providing not only amazing flavours for me to blend with, but also powerful functional benefits too.
